Healthy teeth play an important role in a child’s overall well-being. Developing good oral hygiene habits early helps support healthy teeth and gums as children grow. A child’s regular dental check up is usually recommended before their second birthday, followed by regular visits as advised by the dentist. At Smile Dental Clinic, we provide guidance for parents on caring for children’s teeth and establishing good oral health routines.

PREVENTIVE DENTISTRY

Preventive dental care helps children become comfortable with dental visits and supports early detection of potential oral health concerns. Regular check ups allow the dentist to monitor tooth development, identify bite issues such as crossbites or overbites, and provide advice tailored to each child’s needs. Early positive experiences can also help reduce dental anxiety later in life.

Limiting sugary and acidic foods and drinks is also important in helping to reduce the risk of tooth decay.

BRUSHING

When baby teeth begin to appear, teeth should be gently brushed once a day using a soft, child appropriate toothbrush and water. From around 18 months of age, a pea sized amount of suitable toothpaste may be introduced, as advised by your dentist.

Children between two and eight years of age should be supervised while brushing to help them learn proper technique and to ensure toothpaste is spat out. Brushing twice a day for two minutes, usually in the morning and before bed, is recommended to support good oral hygiene.
